‘Nigeria First’ Policy Aims to Revive Manufacturing
In the latest news from the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Minister of State John Enoh revealed during a media briefing that the policy would boost the manufacturing sector’s growth by 20% within three years. Additionally, it is expected to reduce imports by 30% and generate over 500,000 jobs in the short term.
“This initiative is estimated to contribute about N3 trillion annually to Nigeria’s economy,” Enoh said, emphasizing its transformative impact on industrial productivity and job creation.
NASENI Calls It a ‘Game-Changer’ for Local Manufacturing
Khalil Halilu, Executive Vice Chairman of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), hailed the policy as a catalyst for industrial revolution in Nigeria. He noted that government procurement plays a major role in driving demand and that prioritizing Nigerian products will stimulate local innovation and enterprise.
“This move will translate into increased patronage of Nigerian-made products across key sectors,” Halilu stated, while calling on manufacturers to uphold high standards and quality in their products.
Policy Backed by Executive Order, BPP Guidelines
President Bola Tinubu had on May 5, 2025, directed the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to revise procurement guidelines in favor of local suppliers. The policy will be further strengthened by an Executive Order that mandates all government agencies and citizens to prioritize Made-in-Nigeria goods and services.
The BPP is tasked with maintaining a registry of qualified local manufacturers and service providers, ensuring transparency and ease of access during procurement.
