2027 Election: Tinubu Moves Strategically as Opposition Rallies for a Coalition

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken bold steps to reshape his political strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As the opposition—led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—ramps up efforts to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tinubu is taking his campaign beyond party lines with strategic state visits and project commissions.

Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has emphasized the need for a united opposition to defeat Tinubu in 2027. His call for unity gained momentum following the defection of Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, from APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In what appears to be a counter move, President Tinubu has intensified nationwide engagements, visiting both APC-controlled and opposition-led states. These visits are not only political but also aimed at highlighting his administration’s developmental strides.

Tinubu’s Strategic Visits in May

  • Katsina State: On May 2, Tinubu visited Katsina, the home state of former President Muhammadu Buhari, on a two-day official tour. He met with key stakeholders and reviewed the security situation in the region.

  • Anambra State: On May 8, the president arrived at the Chinua Achebe International Airport in Umueri, Anambra State. During his visit, he commissioned several infrastructure projects, marking a significant engagement in a state governed by the opposition.
  • Abia State (Upcoming): Tinubu is expected to visit Abia State later this month to launch the $1.3 billion Abia Medical City. He is also scheduled to commission the popular Port Harcourt Road, which has been in disrepair for nearly 20 years.

These moves by President Tinubu are seen as calculated steps to build goodwill, foster unity, and strengthen his re-election chances ahead of the 2027 presidential poll.
