Arteta sets Runarsson challenge after axing goalkeeper from Europa League squad.
Mikel Arteta sets Alex Runarsson challenge after axing goalkeeper from Europa League squad. Mikel Arteta chose to leave Alex Runarsson out of Arsenal’s Europa League squad but has challenged the Icelandic goalkeeper to prove his worth and challenge for the no 1 spot.
Mikel Arteta insists it is up to Alex Runarsson to prove he deserves to be Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper. The Spaniard’s challenge comes after he axed the Iceland international from his Europa League squad.
January arrival Mat Ryan was included along with club no 1 Bernd Leno. Runarsson may be called upon this weekend however with the German suspended and the Brighton loanee struggling for fitness.
Arteta has no issues with selecting the 25-year-old in the same week that he omitted him from their European squad.
Instead the Arsenal boss has tasked Runarsson with proving his worth insisting he can be no 1 should he perform.
He said: “Alex knew his role before we signed him and obviously he knows his role after we signed him.
